About the Warrior Gateway Project

Is the Warrior Gateway a government or military program?

No—we are not a government or military program. We are a non-profit program that receives all our funding from non-governmental sources, including private grants and corporate sponsors. We also rely on donations from our users; if you would like to donate, click here.

Does the Warrior Gateway directly provide services, like housing assistance or PTSD counseling?

No—we do not directly deliver services. Instead, we allow users to easily search our database of existing service providers, to which they can then go directly for services.

Have the various branches of the military signed on to support this project?

We have briefed B.G. Cheek of the Army Warrior Transition Command, Capt. Watkins of Navy Safe Harbor, Paul Williamson at the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment, and Admiral Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Everyone we have spoken with has been very supportive and enthusiastic about the project. We are also working to speak with representatives from the Air Force and Coast Guard soon.

Who else is involved?

Many, many organizations and people—the Warrior Gateway was developed and assisted by a broad coalition of partners. You can see the full list here.

I’m interested in helping out—how can I get involved?

We’d love your help! Any organizations that are interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact us. Individuals interested in getting involved can assist us by donating—your financial support allows us to continue to develop and expand this vital resource for the military community. You can also help us out by requesting an invitation to the beta release, trying out the site, and telling us what you think.

Site Features

How much does it cost to sign up?

Nothing! Using the Warrior Gateway is completely free of charge to our military community and service provider users. In the future, we will be launching a number of advanced features (e.g., Business Intelligence & Reporting) for employers that will require a paid account, but for now everything is free.

Who can use the Gateway?

Anyone can use the Warrior Gateway, although there are three specific audiences that will find it useful: the military community (which includes veterans, active duty, reserve and guard members plus their spouses, families, and caretakers); service providers (particularly those which offer services to the military community); and employers (particularly those looking to hire veterans).

When does the site launch?

The site launched its private beta release on January 31, 2010. The public beta release is scheduled for March 15, 2010.

What does it mean that you’re in “beta”?

The beta release is the first release of the site. Since it’s a fairly complex and dynamic site, we wanted to put the site up and have a small number of people test it out for us, to make sure there are no bugs. Thus the beta release can be accessed by invite only.

The beta release is also somewhat limited in the data we currently have. For instance, in the Careers section, we provide predictions of the growth rate for various jobs and careers, based on economic data for each state. Right now we only have this data for North Carolina, but we are crunching the numbers for the other 49 states and should have this data for them soon.

This sounds great—how can I participate in the beta?

If you’d like to test out the Warrior Gateway for us and provide us with feedback on how the site works, you can request an invitation here.

What features currently exist?

Currently, the Warrior Gateway has two sections—Warrior Gateway Directory and Warrior Gateway Careers. You can read about each section in greater detail here, but in brief: the Directory is a database that allows users to search for service providers (nonprofits, government programs, etc.) near them, as well as leave ratings/reviews for those service providers. The Careers section is a career exploration engine that allows users to input their military skills and personal aptitudes and translate them into careers that fit their talents and interests in the civilian sector.

Are there more features planned?

There are. To read more about these future sections of the site, click here.

Warrior Gateway Directory

I work for a service provider—how can I get my organization listed in the Directory?

First, check to make sure your organization isn’t already listed—our database contains listings from several partner directories (like the National Resource Directory), so your organization might already be there. If it’s not, you can easily add your organization by clicking the ‘Add a Service Provider’ button, accessible on the Directory homepage. You will input information about your organization (name, address, phone number, etc.), then you will be given the choice to link your newly-created profile to your Warrior Gateway account. If you do so, you will become the administrator for your organization’s profile, allowing you to easily edit your organization’s information and leave official responses to user reviews left your organization.

What are the requirements for a service provider to be listed?

There are no requirements—our goal is to be as inclusive as possible, so any organization that provides services to the military community can be listed.

I know of some service providers, but they aren’t listed in the Directory—what does that mean?

While our aim is to eventually list all service providers, but there may be some we haven’t found yet. If you know of a service provider that isn’t currently listed, it probably means we just haven’t run across that organization yet. The best thing to do in this case is to either create a listing for that service provider, or talk with the organization and recommend that they create a profile for themselves on the Warrior Gateway.

Where does your data for service providers come from?

Our data comes from several sources. We have a number of strategic data partners (such as the National Resource Directory, Network of Care, and TexVet) who have syndicated their listings for service providers into the Warrior Gateway. Also, many listings are submitted and updated by our users.

How do I provide feedback for a service provider?

It’s easy! On the profile page for a service provider, you will see a ‘Rate this Service Provider’ box on the right. All you need to do is rate the service provider from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) in the given categories, write an optional review, then click the ‘Rate’ button. You’ll have to be logged into your account to publish feedback though.

Where do the reviews/ratings for service providers come from?

The ratings and reviews come entirely from Warrior Gateway users—people who have used a service provider and want to share their experiences with the community of Warrior Gateway users.

A user left negative feedback for my organization on the Directory—can I remove it?

You cannot. Comments can only be removed if they violate our terms of use, which generally means they contain profanities, explicit material, or spam. If a comment contains these things, you can flag it by clicking on the ‘Flag this Comment’ button below the comment. Negative comments that do not violate our terms of use, however, will not be removed. While negative feedback left for your organization might seem bad, it can also be constructive, as it can help you to identify areas for which there is room for improvement within your organization.

Warrior Gateway Careers

How is Warrior Gateway Careers different from the other job sites out there?

Most other job sites are merely job boards where employers post listings for jobs. Warrior Gateway goes several steps beyond the typical job board by providing an extensive career exploration tool which allows users to translate their interests, personality traits, and military skills/experience into a list of careers that specifically match their abilities and preferences. Users can then learn more these careers on our Industry and Job pages, which include short videos that describe the day-to-day experience of various jobs. Additionally, Warrior Gateway Careers has its own job board, so users can browse job opportunities currently available in the career fields they are interested in.

How can I post a job or list information about my company on Warrior Gateway Careers?

You can post a job by clicking on the ‘Post a Job’ link on the Warrior Gateway Careers homepage. We also offer a number of tools for employers looking to recruit within the military candidate pool, as part of our corporate sponsorship package. If your company is interested in learning more, please contact us.

I’m not in the military—can I still apply for a job?

You can, although you should note that many employers who post jobs on Warrior Gateway Careers are looking specifically for candidates with military experience which relates to the job posted. All verification of military status will be performed by the employer; simply applying to a job through the Warrior Gateway does not serve as proof of a military background.
